Assessment and Management of Musculoskeletal Injuries

As Occupational Health Nurses, we frequently see employees that complain of pain somewhere in their upper extremities while they sit at their computer or while they are completing their job . . . the same way they have been doing it for years!  So what happened? How do we take care of these individuals?  Learning how to assess complaints and accommodate these employees is essential  for returning them to their full duties.

Dr. Terry Black is a physical therapist and dynamic speaker who specializes in workplace ergonomics and related issues.  Terry works at both NIH and the Smithsonian Institution, and has presented to a variety of audiences on numerous topics including prevention and treatment of injuries to the musculoskeletal system as a result of the work place environment. She will enlighten us on issues surrounding these injuries and what to do about them. In addition, there will be an opportunity to practice assessment of these injuries and a hands-on interactive experience so we can hit the ground running when we return to work on Thursday!

1.0 CNE unit has been applied for through
the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses.

Dinner and networking 5:30-6:20 PM; lecture begins at 6:30PM.

Location:  National Geographic Society (NGS)
1600 M St NW,   2nd floor staff conference room
Washington D.C.,  20036

Free parking, but you must give us notice no later than January 13th at 5 PM so that you can go on the security list!

Accessible by Metro Red line ( 2  1/2 blocks away: Farragut North, L Street exit) and Blue / Orange line ( 4 blocks away, Farragut West, 17th Street Exit) - see walking directions below

IMPORTANT: There are two buildings at NGS - The building with the public museum is at 1145 17th Street NW. The other building is called "the M Street building"  by NGS insiders  and can be accessed directly from M St or by entering at 1145 17th street and walking straight through the building, going outside again through the glass doors, and crossing the spacious courtyard where you will see the M Street Building entrance. You will have to check in with the guards at both buildings, so entering directly at M Street will be less time consuming.

Parking: The parking garage is located under the M Street Building and has only one entrance, which is on M Street,  just past 16th St on the left hand side. Note that M street runs 1 way West bound. If you reach 17th street, you have gone too far - turn right on 17th, circle the block and come back down 16th street, turning right on M street and you will see garage entrance directly on your left. A security guard stands at the entrance at all times and he will have a list on names of MWAOHN dinner meeting attendees. Give your name, and he will allow you to park in the garage.  If your name is not on the list, you will not be allowed to park, so you MUST provide Sharon Striker with your name at least 5 days prior to the meeting (by January 13th at 5 PM). There are commercial garages in the neighborhood, but they will cost up to $ 17!  Once parked, find the elevators and go up to the 2nd floor. Signs will direct you to the Staff Conference Room.

Metro Walking Directions:

From Farragut North (Red Line:)  Be sure you exit the train at the "L St" exit, not the "K St" exit. To get as close as possible, you want to exit on L Street on the East side of Connecticut Ave, so follow the arrow to "L St"  but walk to the extreme end of the platform. Although you will see a set of  2 escalators, they take you up to the West side of L Street.  Instead, walk around those, looking for the extreme end of the platform where you will see 3 escalators. Take one of those and you will exit on the east side of Connecticut Avenue, placing you closer to the NGS.  Walk 1 block east along L Street (you will notice the car traffic is one way east bound, so walk the same way cars are going) and turn left onto 17th Street. Walk one block until you get to M Street - you will see the big 17th Street NGS public museum building on the other side of the street. Once at M Street, turn right and cross 17th Street. Continue down M St  for just 1/2 block. On your right, you will see a big spacious stone courtyard - turn right, cross the courtyard to the large glass building entrance which is 1600 M St. Check in with the guard and then proceed to take the elevator to the 2nd floor where signs will direct you to the Staff Conference Room.

From Farragut West ( Blue and Orange line:) Be sure you exit the train at the "17th St"exit. Exiting the station, you will see Farragut Square, a public park, right in front of you. Even though you are standing at 17th and I, if you walked towards K St (big wide boulevard on the other side of the park) on 17th, you would find that 17th street turns into Connecticut Ave after it crosses K St. Where did 17th St go? It picks up one block east of Connecticut Ave. So the best way to walk is to cross I street and then walk diagonally across the park, walking around the statue of Farragut, and you will find yourself at the corner of 17th and K (Dress Barn Woman is across the street.) Cross K street and walk straight ahead, up 17th Street. After one block, you are at L Street. Cross L Street, continuing up 17th St. You will see the big 17th  NGS public museum building on the opposite side of 17th St as you get towards M St. When you reach M Street, turn right, crossing 17th Street. continue walking down M St  for just 1/2 block. On your right, you will see a big spacious stone courtyard - turn right into the courtyard, and cross it to get to the large glass building entrance which is 1600 M St. Check in with the guard and then proceed to take the elevator to the 2nd floor where signs will direct you to the Staff Conference Room.

If you are early, feel free to tour the NGS public exhibits!

In February, 2011, the Board voted unanimously on the following policies related to our dinner meetings:
  1. The registration deadline for our dinner meetings will be the Friday prior to the meeting at 4:30 PM.  If you want to attend but have missed the Friday deadline, you are welcome to come as a "walk-in" but you must bring your own brown-bag dinner and identify yourself as a "walk-in" at the door.
  2. If you have pre-registered and pre-paid but find you are unable to attend, we cannot refund your money or credit your payment for a future dinner. (see # 4 below for one possible remedy)
  3. If you have pre-registered but not yet paid and then find you cannot  attend, you still owe us the money for the dinner you ordered. Please remit $ 5.00 to reimburse us for your Potbelly dinner cost us at your earliest convenience. (see # 4 below for one possible remedy)
  4. Pre-registered attendees who find they must miss a meeting may transfer the registration to a colleague who should identify themselves at the door as a substitute for you. You can collect your refund from them and/or instruct them to pay your fee at the door. They must accept the dinner you pre-ordered; we cannot change the Potbelly order after the Friday before the meeting.
These policies were enacted because the number of last minute changes made the registrar's work too difficult and MWAOHN was losing money on dinners ordered but not paid for.

If you have any questions or need to make one of these special arrangements,
contact Sharon Striker
at strikers@si.edu
