Annual Reports to the Membership from the Committees
August 2009 - July 2010 MWAOHN Calendar Year Metropolitan Washington Association of Occupational Health Nurses
Report of the Planning Committee The planning committee had a great 2009-2010 season. We continue to hold our MWAOHN dinner meetings in the conference room of the Ford Office Building and purchase our (dinner) sandwiches and salads from Potbellys. We have received no complaints regarding food or location. To accommodate attendee's requests, we have moved the dinner to 5:30 p.m. with program at 6:30 p.m. Magdelena Marquez has joined our committee. Thank you Maggie. If you'd like to be a member of the Planning Committee, please email me @ conradesj@mwaohn.org or call me on 301.249.6718.
Respectfully submitted, Joe Ann Conrades, Chair With help from Rebecca Jahandari, Phyllis Waslo, and Karen Barry
Report of the Public Affairs Committee The Public Affairs Committee continued providing news and occupational health nursing updates in 2009 through the MWAOHN website and periodic email news releases. Types of information included notifications about local, regional and national conferences and meetings, employee and OHN educational materials and opportunities, health news updates and career position openings. MWAOHN Public Affairs supports the educational endeavors of our colleagues nationwide through listings of other AAOHN organizations activities on the MWAOHN Calendar.
Respectfully Submitted, Claudia Beach, Chair
Report of the Nominating Committee The nominating committee was able to recommend one candidate for the following positions: President, Secretary, Board of Directors, and Nominating Committee. The ballots were sent by mail to members in a timely manner with directions regarding the sealed ballots and the date they should be received by the Chairman of Tellers.
It would be great if everyone would update their info to AAOHN. Frequently, work or home numbers and email addresses were incorrect or not given. Without the correct information, it is difficult to communicate with a member regarding opportunities to serve our local organization.
Outgoing members of the Board are: Virginia Rauer (President 2008 - 2010); Barbara Hayden (Secretary 2008 - 2010), Lillie Mitchell (director 2008 - 2010, member of the membership Committee); and Rebecca Janhandari (Chair of the Nominating Committee 2008 - 2010.) We cannot thank you enough for all your hard work and dedication to this organization.
Members who would like to serve on the board, please speak with any of the officers about their duties, and to members of the nominating committee about your interest.
Respectfully Submitted, Rebecca Jahandari, Chair, Nominating Committee Along with Karen Barry and Esmee Swann, Committee Members
Tellers Report We received a total of 29 ballots by mail. This included a ballot from a retired member, which was not counted. The votes were as follows: President Barbara Hayden 28 votes Secretary Doris Angulo 27 votes Board of Directors Deborah Garrison 27 votes Nominating Committee Wenda Duano 27 votes
Apparently one person who voted thought that one check could count for all positions. This is why the other positions were one vote short.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for your service to our organization.
Report of the Professional Affairs Committee The Professional Affairs Committee has hosted 5 dinner meetings in the 2009 - 2010 Chapter year, giving attendees 1.0 CNE/ CEU per lecture. The dates, speakers, and titles of the lectures were as follows:
September 16, 2009 Stress Management for the OHN Nurse by Preeti Chandramani, MS
November 4, 2009 HIV Update: Employee Health by the Inova Learning Network, Dr. Lisa Fitzpatrick was our speaker
January 13, 2010 Cough: What Does it Mean? By Dr. Joel Taubin
March 10, 2010 Workstation Ergonomics by Stephen Sarro, PT
May 12, 2010 TechnoStress by Star Muir, PhD from George Mason University
The committee diversified our Continuing Education credentials in an effort to be more multi-disciplinary: the November lecture-s CEUs came from the Inova Learning Network and the May lecture's CEUs came from George Mason University's Dept of Continuing Education .
The 2009 - 2010 Professional Affairs Committee was composed of Barbara Hayden, Karen Hirakawa, Susan Cheney, and Charlotte Carniero, who worked cooperatively to find speakers, submit (detailed and cumbersome!) applications to AAOHN for continuing education credits (when we used AAOHN) and guided the speakers through the process: not always an easy set of tasks!
The 2010 - 2011 Professional Affairs Committee will be composed of Jill Dombrowski, Rebecca Jahandari, and Charlotte Carneiro, with help as needed from the board and previous members.
Any member or affiliate of MWAOHN who would like to help with the work of this committee, please feel free to contact the above members. All ideas and any help you can give are welcome!
Respectfully Submitted, Barbara Hayden, Chair
