2008 MWAOHN Committee Reports

MWAOHN Planning Committee 2008 Annual Report

The planning committee organized and managed the logistics and food for the bimonthly educational programs. During this fiscal year, five dinner/meetings were held at the Ford Office Building cafeteria, located on 3rd St SW, Washington, DC, averaging 30 in attendance for each meeting. The majority of employees appreciated the location – close to metro and free ground parking for attendees. The attendees also appreciated the food choices that included both vegetarian and regular menus. The present caterers, Continental Services, were not awarded the contract for upcoming fiscal year. Therefore, the planning committee will work with MWAOHN members, requesting feedback regarding their choice for location, menu, cost, etc.. We anticipate survey results to be returned no later than May 30, 2008.

MWAOHN Public Affairs Committee 2008 Annual Report

The Public Affairs Committee applied for and won the AAOHN Chapter Communications Award for the 2nd year in a row. Virginia Rauer accepted the award at the AAOHN Annual Symposium in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Committee also created the MWAOHN website offering members and guests current information on MWAOHN activities, and the opportunity to RSVP to dinner meetings electronically. The Committee published 5 editions of the Reflex Newsletter. The Chair also represented AAOHN in the 2008 Nurse in Washington Internship Program and the North American Occupational Safety and Health Annual Meeting, both held in Washington, D.C.

MWAOHN Nominating Committee 2008 Annual Report

The nominating committee was able to recommend one candidate each for the following positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Board of Directors, and Nominating Committee. It would be great if we could offer our members a ballot of 2 or 3 candidates for each position from which to select. You can always talk to any of the officers about their duties if you are interested in a position. The ballots were sent by mail to members in a timely manner with directions regarding the sealed ballots and the date they should be received by the Chairman of Tellers.

Report of the MWAOHN Professional Affairs Committee

This year, the reins of the Professional Affairs committee were transferred from the capable and experienced Karen Vesterby and Beverly Kozak to Barbara Hayden. Barbara navigated the CEU applications through AAOHN, collected and tallied evaluations, and set up the power point presentations at each meeting. This year, in cooperation with the planning and membership committees, we hosted 5 “Dinner and Learn” meetings with an average attendance of 30 people. The topics were:

Sept 12, 2007 Kathleen Luton, RN, CRNP

“Nursing Assessment of the Eyes and Ears”

Nov 14, 2007 Dr. Joseph A. Romeo, MD, FACC

“Heart Disease 2007”

Jan 9, 2008 Richard R. Mayfield, RN, MS

“How to Handle a Hostage Situation”

March 12, 2008 Charlotte Carneiro RN, MS, COHN-S, CIC

“Epidemiology of MRSA 2008 and Applications to Occupational Health”

May 14, 2008 Jennifer Seven, MA

“Steps and Tools to Promote Health and Wellness in the Workplace”

Next year, the reins will again transfer – this time from Barbara Hayden to two eager and capable new members: Karen Hirakawa and Sharon McKinney. Please let them know about topics you want to learn more about, any excellent speakers you can recommend, and whether you would like to help them in their valuable work.
