The American Academy of Neurology reports in the July 22, 2008 issue of Neurology® that a recent study shows taking the epilepsy drug topiramate alone or along
with other epilepsy drugs during pregnancy may increase the risk of
birth defects.
Researchers found "that more birth defects occurred in women taking
topiramate along with the drug valproate, or valproic acid, than in
women taking topiramate and another epilepsy drug."
Experts stress that this is a small study and more study is needed. Pregnant women should not stop their seizure medication unless told to do so by their physician.
